We don’t want to be friends with a ‘caged tiger’: Maharashtra BJP chief Chandrakant Patil

Pune, Jun 10 (PTI) Maharashtra BJP president Chandrakant Patil on Thursday clarified his “friendship with a tiger” remark, saying his party does not want to be friends with a “caged tiger”.

Patil also indicated at a press conference held here on the occasion of his birthday that the BJP would prefer to contest the upcoming civic body elections in the state alone. Municipal elections are to be held in Mumbai, Pune and other major cities in early 2022.

Patil said, “Recently, I went to an event where a volunteer working in the wildlife sector gifted me a photo album with a replica of a tiger. I reacted to his courtesy, saying it was a nice gift and “we will always be friends with the tiger.” However, media personnel linked this statement to Shiv Sena as its symbol is a tiger. It is true that we always try to maintain friendship but we would like to be friends with a tiger who is free in the jungle, not in a cage.

Patil’s previous statement had fueled speculation that the BJP is looking to join hands with its old ally Shiv Sena, which is currently in power in Maharashtra along with the Congress and the NCP.

Former minister Patil also challenged the political parties of the state to contest the upcoming elections alone.
