Urges the Chief Minister of Assam to conduct a proper inquiry into the death of elephants.

Guwahati, Jun 8 (PTI) An environmental organization has urged Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to conduct a proper scientific investigation into the recent death of 18 elephants at a proposed sanctuary in Assam’s Nagaon district.

Environment organization ‘Nature’s Becon’ said that the recent postmortem and investigation report on the death of elephants by state Forest Minister Parimal Shuklabaidya appears to be “erroneous”.

Soumyadeep Dutta, Director, Nature’s Becon, said on Tuesday that as an organization we are committed to the conservation of biodiversity. “We appeal to the Chief Minister to intervene in this matter and constitute a new committee for scientific investigation to find out the truth in the death of 18 wild Asian elephants,” he said.

Dutta demanded setting up of a committee headed by a retired judge and that it should include a geologist, electrical engineer, representatives of Zoological Survey of India, representatives of Wildlife Institute of India, police officers and representatives of civil society groups, On May 12, the cases of death of elephants in Bamuni mountain will be investigated.

He also demanded that anyone who has committed the offense of destruction or suppression of any evidence in connection with the incident should be convicted at the earliest.
