Tripura High Court formed SIT for investigation in the case of death of couple due to suicide

Agartala, Jun 7 (PTI) The Tripura High Court has appointed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe into the suicide of a 23-year-old girl after she was allegedly tortured by an “illegal court” (kangaroo court) in South Tripura district. SIT) has been formed.

A police official said that a few days after the victim’s death, her husband also committed suicide. The three-member SIT will have Lucky Chauhan, commandant of Tripura Police’s Central Training Institute, Belonia sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) Soumya Debbarman and Tripura Human Rights Commission in-charge Babita Bhattacharjee.

A division bench of Chief Justice Akil A Qureshi and Justice Shubhashish Talpatra on Friday directed the SIT to submit its report on June 25, the next date of hearing in the matter. According to the police, the woman was allegedly made naked and garlanded with shoes at Betaga in Sabroom sub-division by an “illegal court” alleging extramarital affairs.

On May 6, a few days after the alleged harassment, the woman allegedly committed suicide in the village. After this news was published in some local newspapers, the court took cognizance of the matter on the basis of a PIL and ordered an inquiry. The court also asked the SIT to keep the death of the victim’s husband under its ambit.
