The issue of “inactive” women’s commission in Bihar was raised by filing a public interest litigation in the court

Patna, Jun 11 (PTI) A PIL was filed in the Patna High Court on Friday raising the issue of obstruction in the functioning of the State Commission for Women. The State Commission for Women is without a head for seven months, due to which no action is being taken on the complaints pending with it, nor is any new complaint being accepted.

The PIL has been filed by Om Prakash Sharma. Sharma requested the court to intervene in the matter and said that since the expiry of the term of the former chairperson of the Women’s Commission, the post is vacant.

As a result, the Commission has virtually become “dormant”, neither receiving fresh complaints nor making any progress regarding pending complaints, which are said to number around 20,000.

The petitioner argued that due to this situation, a large number of aggrieved women and girls in the state are deprived of justice.

The PIL is expected to be heard before a bench at an appropriate time.
