Chavda and Gujarat Congress Legislature Party (CLP) chief Prakash Dhanani had resigned in March this year after losing to the BJP in the local body elections. Chavda and Dhanani were instructed by the central leadership to continue working till their appointment to these posts.
In-charge of Gujarat Congress Rajiv Satav had also started the process of selecting the new President of Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee. However, he passed away last month due to complications post-Covid-19. Gujarat Congress spokesperson Manish Doshi said, “GPCC president Amit Chavda and CLP leader Paresh Dhanani had resigned from their posts in March following the defeat in the local body elections.”
“The high command may replace him with new leaders as elections are due next year,” he said, adding that the party would soon appoint a state Congress in-charge as well. In the 2017 Gujarat Assembly elections, the Congress had won 77 seats, while the BJP got 99 seats in the 182-member House.
According to sources, the leaders have intensified efforts for the state PCC president. The high command also wants to appoint a state in-charge. Sources said senior leaders Shaktisinh Gohil, Bharat Singh Solanki and Arjun Modwadia are in the race for state Congress president. He told that former Union Minister Solanki has been camping in Delhi for the last two days. According to sources, the names of Avinash Pandey, Mohan Prakash and BK Hariprasad are being considered for Gujarat Congress in-charge. CLP chief Dhanani is unlikely to be replaced for the time being, he added.
