Mumbai, June 6 : Great cricketer Sunil Gavaskar became the first cricketer to complete 10,000 runs in Test cricket. Gavaskar retired from cricket in 1987 after a career of 16 years. Despite being such a great player, he never showed interest in becoming the coach of Team India. Many veterans took over this responsibility in the 90’s, including Sandeep Patil, Anshuman Gaikwad, Kapil Dev, but Gavaskar has revealed why he did not become a coach.

Gavaskar was speaking on The Analyst YouTube channel. ‘I am not the right person as a coach, because to be a coach or a selector you have to watch every ball. I watch the match in pieces. When I used to play cricket, even after returning to the pavilion, I did not watch the full match. After watching the match for a while, I would go to read a book or reply to letters. I have never seen every ball of a match like Gundappa Vishwanath or my uncle Madhav Mantri, ‘said Gavaskar.

Although Gavaskar did not become the coach of the team, he always gave useful advice to the players. Currently, however, he is not seen giving batting tips to the players. When Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid were in the team, Gavaskar always told them something about batting. Sachin and Dravid have also said this many times.

‘Old Team India players used to come to me, especially Sachin, Dravid, Ganguly, Laxman and Sehwag. These players discussed with me several times. I loved talking to them about sports. I would tell them what I felt about their game. They may have benefited from my advice, but I can’t coach the team full time, ‘said Gavaskar.
