Director General of Police (DGP) Dinkar Gupta said that the alleged smuggler was acting at the behest of a handler living in the US.
He said that the confiscated weapons were deposited in different parts of the country to end terrorist activities.
An FIR was registered in connection with the case on Thursday night at the State Special Operations Cell (SSOC) police station, Amritsar under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code and Arms Act, Gupta said.
He said further investigation is on to expose the entire nexus.
In a statement issued here, Gupta said that Jagjit Singh alias Jaggu (25), a resident of Puriian Kalan under Sadan Batala police station area of Batala district, was arrested by a team of Punjab Internal Security Wing of SAOC Amritsar from Kathunangal in Amritsar.
“In an operation launched based on intelligence inputs, SSOC Amritsar intercepted an I-20 car at a specially put up police checkpoint on Amritsar-Batala road in Kathunangal village,” he said.
The DGP said that the team recovered two nylon bags from the car in which 48 pistols of various foreign marks and bores as well as magazines and ammunition were recovered.
