PDP demands withdrawal of ‘property tax’ imposed on residents of Badamibagh Cantonment

Srinagar, Jun 11 (PTI) After some residents of the Badamibagh Cantonment Board area of Srinagar claimed to have received a property tax notice, the People’s Democratic Party on Friday demanded its withdrawal.

PDP chief spokesperson Suhail Bukhari said at a press conference here that the decision to arbitrarily impose property tax on those living under the jurisdiction of Badamibagh Cantonment Board has been taken and it should be withdrawn immediately.

Badamibagh Cantonment Board is an autonomous body under the Ministry of Defence. Bukhari said that there have been reports that people living under the jurisdiction of the Cantonment Board are being asked to pay property tax. Instead of helping the troubled people since the year 2019, the government is pushing the people into more dire situation.

He said that the decision to collect property tax from the local people should be withdrawn immediately as the people of the Valley were facing financial crunch. According to the board’s website, Badamibagh Cantonment is a ‘Class II’ cantonment established in 1954 and has an area of 1458.537 acres, of which 313.50 acres is civilian area.

Expressing concern over the alleged imposition of tax by the Cantonment Board, National Conference leader Ahsan Pardeshi said that people are under a lot of stress and they are not able to pay the tax.

Jammu Kashmir Apni Party’s (JKAP) provincial president (Kashmir) Mohammad Ashraf Mir also objected to the tax being imposed by the board. He said that this arbitrary decision will only add to the difficulties of the people who are already facing many problems. He has also sought the intervention of the central government in the matter.
