Hospital sources said that Radha Mohan of Gandhian ideology was admitted in the ICU for the last few days after suffering from pneumonia.
Many people including President Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik have condoled his death.
Radha Mohan and her daughter Sabarmati were awarded the Padma Shri last year for their 30-year efforts to convert barren land into a green forest in Nayagarh district.
Father-son formed a social organization to spread awareness among farmers on sustainable organic farming.
Born in 1943 in a small village in Nayagarh district, Radha Mohan graduated in economics from ACS College in Puri and did a master’s in applied economics from Utkal University in 1965.
Condoling his death, President Ram Nath Kovind tweeted, “Professor Radha Mohan was an inspirational economist and environmentalist. He was a great scholar who turned to organic farming to enrich nature and humanity. His death will create a void. My condolences to his family and fans.
The Odisha government also honored him with the Utkal Seva Samman for his outstanding social service. Similarly, UNEP honored Radha Mohan with “The Global Role of Honour” for her remarkable work on the environment.
Prime Minister Modi tweeted, “Prof. Radha Mohan ji was very enthusiastic about adopting agriculture especially sustainable and organic farming. He was also highly respected for his knowledge on subjects related to economics and ecology. My condolences to his family and fans. om Shanti.”
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik tweeted, “Professor of Gandhian ideology and Padma Shri awardee. Very sad to know about the passing of Radha Mohan. Economist turned environmentalist Radha Mohan made a remarkable contribution to sustainable organic farming. My condolences to the bereaved family members and well wishers.
Andhra Pradesh Governor B B Harichandan described Radha Mohan’s death as an irreparable loss to the organic farming sector of Odisha.
Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said that his commitment towards environmental protection and organic farming will be remembered in times to come.
