Over 46% of buildings in Ahmedabad do not have fire safety NOC: civic body

Ahmedabad, Jun 9 (PTI) The city’s civic body on Wednesday told the Gujarat High Court that more than 46 per cent of the buildings in Ahmedabad city do not have a valid fire safety no-objection certificate (NOC).

Hospitals, schools, residential and residential-cum-commercial units, malls, multiplexes, theaters require a fire safety NOC from the local authorities after complying with the norms laid down for it.

In an affidavit filed in the court of Justice Bela Trivedi and Justice Bhargava D Karia, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) said that out of 10,329 such buildings, 4,784 or 46.3 per cent, are without valid fire safety NOCs. It said that out of 1,852 hospitals and clinics in the city, 374 do not have any fire safety NOC, which has to be obtained from the competent authorities after meeting the prescribed criteria for a fire protection system.

As per the affidavit, 1,353 out of 2,425 schools have no valid fire safety NOC while 1,876 out of 3,165 residential buildings, 663 out of 1,344 residential-cum-commercial institutions, and 443 out of 1,268 commercial structures have no fire protection. No NOC.

Meanwhile, the Rajkot city civic body said that out of 268 hospitals and clinics, 244 do not have valid fire safety NOCs.

A PIL has been filed by advocate Amit Panchal on fire safety issue, which will be heard on June 11.
