In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Pala urged him to take corrective measures and provide adequate funds to the poor farmers of the state, most of whom belong to tribal communities. He said that by providing assistance, they would be able to take care of themselves and their families in the time of pandemic.
The MP said in the letter, “Out of the population of 35 lakh of Meghalaya, 85 percent are farmers. Under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Yojana, if only 8967 farmers have been provided financial assistance by the Government of India, then the central government has done injustice to the farmers of the state.
He claimed that under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Yojana, 8967 farmers of the state received an amount of Rs 1,79,34,000, which is the lowest in comparison to the rest of the North-Eastern states.
It is noteworthy that under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Yojana, the central government provides an amount of 6,000 to 14 crore farmers in three installments every year.
