Odisha’s coastal districts need disaster resilient infrastructure: Central team

Bhubaneswar, Jun 8 (PTI) The Central team, which arrived in Odisha to visit the affected areas due to Cyclone Yas, has stressed the need to develop disaster resilient infrastructure in the coastal districts of the state. Official sources gave this information on Tuesday.

Sunil Kumar Barnwal, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs, who is heading the seven-member team, held a meeting with State Chief Secretary SC Mohapatra and other senior officials here on Tuesday.

The central team visited the cyclone-hit Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Mayurbhanj and Jagatsinghpur districts of Odisha from Monday to take stock of the damage.

“There is a need for disaster resilient roads and power infrastructure in the coastal districts of Odisha,” Chief Secretary’s Office quoted Barnwal as saying in a statement.

According to the statement, the central team appreciated the state government for its preparedness for disaster management and response skills, which has saved many lives.

Cyclone Yas hit Odisha’s Bhandara coast on May 26, due to which three people died. The cyclone caused damage to houses and farms.
