Ankit Jain, a 38-year-old businessman from Chikmagalur, Karnataka, recently found a bride named Swati Bhatt through an agent named Satish Patel in Surat. Patel sent Swati’s photo to Jain via WhatsApp and he immediately agreed to the marriage.

Patel told Jain that he would have to pay Bhatt’s brother Hitesh Trivedi Rs 1.7 lakh and his commission of Rs 20,000. When Jain and his mother came to Surat on June 4, they gave Rs 1.5 lakh to Trivedi and Rs 15,000 to Patel. Jain’s mother gave Swati a gold ring worth Rs 20,000, silver anklets worth Rs 1,400 and a sari.

Later, they went to a temple on the banks of river Tapi near Kapodara and got married in a simple ceremony. After the ritual, when Jain, his mother and Swati were on their way to Parvat Patiya, their uncle’s house, Swati asked them to stop the car near Rachna Circle in Kapodara on the pretext of going to the washroom and having breakfast.

Swati went to the washroom but did not come out for a long time. Jain and his mother searched for her, but could not find her. They called Trivedi but he did not answer Jain’s call.
