India and Kuwait has signed a Memorandum of Understanding, under which Indian domestic workers will be provided with the protection of the law while streamlining their recruitment by bringing them under a legal framework. The MoU was signed by Indian Ambassador Sibi George and Kuwait’s Deputy Foreign Minister on Thursday in the presence of External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and his Kuwait counterpart Sheikh Ahmed Nasser Al-Mohammed Al-Sabah. The two ministers welcomed the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding, under which an employment contract would be introduced, ensuring the rights and obligations of both employers and domestic workers. Efforts will be made to set up a mechanism for 24-hour support to domestic workers as per the MoU. It seeks to constitute a joint committee for periodic review and evaluation, which will hold annual meetings for the implementation of the MoU. More than one million Indians live in Kuwait. India is one of Kuwait’s largest trading partners and Kuwait is a major supplier of oil to India. Jaishankar met Kuwait Prime Minister Sheikh Sabah Khalid Al-Hamad Al-Sabah on Thursday. During that time he handed him a personal letter sent by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the Emir of Kuwait, Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jabir Al-Sabah.
