Increase in MSP of paddy not enough: Badal

Chandigarh, Jun 9 (PTI) Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chief Sukhbir Singh Badal on Wednesday said the hike in Minimum Support Price (MSP) for paddy by the Center is not only inadequate, but it is a “regressive step”. ‘ which will take agriculture backwards instead of doubling farmers’ income by 2022.

Badal said a “marginal increase” of Rs 72 per quintal for the 2021-22 kharif season is not enough and it cannot offset the rise in cost of products such as diesel and fertilizers required for agriculture.

The SAD president, in a statement here, said the government should take into account the actual cost of cultivation while fixing the MSP.

He said that the formula of one and a half times income should be implemented on the actual cost of cultivation.

Badal said that the new MSP is a cruel joke on farmers already facing distress due to three new agriculture laws.

“The carelessness with which the MSP has been calculated also exposes the apathetic attitude of the government towards farmers. Akali Dal is demanding that the government should give remunerative MSP to the farmers to help them. MSP should be increased keeping in view the actual cost of production.
