Gujarat Assembly opposes in court the plea for live telecast of the proceedings of the House

Ahmedabad, Jun 9 (PTI) The state secretariat has opposed in the High Court a PIL seeking live telecast of the proceedings of the Gujarat Assembly and making other documents available online. The Secretariat argues that the legislature has the right to decide which information is suitable for publication/dissemination.

During the hearing of the matter in the High Court, the Secretariat informed a division bench of Justice RM Chhaya and Justice Nirjar S Desai that regularly making public and updating the proceedings of the House and other documents was a legal requirement for him under the Right to Information Act. But not binding.

Nita Hardikar’s PIL has demanded that the court direct the Legislative Assembly to regularly update the copy of the old and ongoing proceedings of the House and related information on its website in Gujarati and English language.

In response to this, the affidavit filed by the Secretariat said, “The Gujarat Legislative Assembly has the right to decide which information is suitable for publication/broadcast.”
