Abdullah’s statement came a day after the Lakshadweep police filed a sedition case against filmmaker Ayesha Sultana on a complaint by a BJP leader. The complaint alleges that Sultana spread false news about the outbreak of Kovid-19 in the Union Territory of Lakshadweep during a TV discussion.
Abdullah tweeted, “Criticism of Patel (Lakshadweep administrator Praful Patel) does not amount to sedition. In a democracy, it is the right of every citizen to criticize those in power. Politicians who do not tolerate criticism “should stop hiding behind the archaic law.”
In Lakshadweep, there has been opposition from various political parties after some reformist steps were taken by the administration.
