Congress leaders, workers in custody protesting against hike in fuel prices

Ahmedabad, Jun 11 (PTI) Over 100 Congress workers, MLAs and leaders were on Friday detained by the police for protesting against the central government over the hike in fuel prices without taking the permission of the police. An official gave this information.

Gujarat Congress leaders and workers organized demonstrations in Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Rajkot, Bharuch, Palanpur and Vadodara as part of a nationwide protest called by the party high command against the hike in petrol and diesel prices.

While Gujarat Congress president Amit Chavda led the protest in Gandhinagar, former state president Bharatsinh Solanki led the protest in Vadodara where workers pulled a car with ropes.

The protest in Ahmedabad was led by senior MLA and Deputy Leader of Opposition Shailesh Parmar.

According to the police, more than 100 Congress workers from different cities have been detained for protesting without permission.

Gandhinagar Deputy Superintendent of Police M.K. Rana said Chavda and 40 others who were protesting near Satyagraha Chhawni ground in Gandhinagar have been detained.

Rana said, “We have met Amit Chavda, Gandhinagar MLA C.J. About 40 Congress workers, including Chavda, have been detained for organizing events without the permission of the police during the coronavirus pandemic.

In Vadodara, police briefly detained Solanki and 20 other Congress workers, while party workers were also detained in other parts of the state, an official said. In Rajkot also 20 activists were detained.

MLA Parmar, before being taken into custody, said that since the BJP came to power at the Center in 2014, the prices of petrol and diesel have been increasing continuously.
