Kochi, Jun 5 (PTI) Marine experts on Saturday warned that the coastal areas of Kerala will see a tendency to rise in the coming years due to rising sea surface temperatures.

This was stated by experts in a webinar organized by the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), Kochi today, on the occasion of World Environment Day. Expressing concern over the calamities faced by the coastal community due to high waves and sea erosion, experts during the webinar demanded restoration of coastal vegetation with emphasis on mangrove afforestation. According to him, it will act as a biological shield to protect the coastal area and save the lives of the people living in the area.

According to a release issued by CMFRI, the webinar said that due to the recent two cyclonic storms Taute and Yas, the entire coastal region of Kerala witnessed “Storm Surge”.

According to the release, experts believe that due to the rapid warming of the waters of the Indian Ocean, such ‘storm surges’ are expected to increase in the coastal areas in the coming years. He said that cyclonic winds cause storm surges and due to these high waves, sea erosion and floods are seen in the settlements of the coastal areas.
