Chhattisgarh: Woman with five children cut off from train, step taken after quarrel with husband

Raipur, June 10 (PTI) A woman and her five daughters allegedly committed suicide after being hit by a speeding train in Chhattisgarh’s Mahasamund district, police said.

Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel has asked the district and police administration to investigate the incident and ensure necessary action.

Mahasamund district’s Additional Superintendent of Police Megha Tembhurkar said here on Thursday that Uma Sahu (45 years old), her daughter Annapurna (18 years), Yashoda (16 years), her daughter Annapurna (18 years), Yashoda (16 years) near Imlibhantha village between Mahasamund and Belsonda village of the district (14 years), Kumkum (12 years) and Tulsi (10 years) committed suicide by being hit by a train.

Tembhurkar said that when the police got information about the incident this morning, a police team was sent to the spot and the bodies were recovered and sent for post-mortem.

He said that the police have received information that the Sahu family is a resident of Bemcha village in the district. In the night, when the woman had a dispute with her husband, she had left with her children. Later his body was found near the railway tracks.

The police officer said that according to the information received so far, the woman has taken this step after a dispute with her husband. The police have not found any suicide note from the spot and the actual reason will be confirmed only after investigation. He said that the police has registered a case and is investigating.

Senior state officials said that Chief Minister Baghel has expressed deep grief over the death of a woman and her five daughters after being struck by a train near Imlibhantha village in Mahasamund district. The Chief Minister has directed the district and police administration to investigate the incident and ensure necessary action.

The Collector of Mahasamund said that according to preliminary investigation, the family was a resident of Bemcha village. Uma Sahu’s husband Kejau Ram Sahu works as a hamali in a rice mill in Mudhena village. There is two and a half acres of land in the name of Kejau. There has been a report of a family dispute last night. Police is investigating in this regard.

Kejau told reporters that he was under the influence of alcohol on Wednesday evening. After dinner at around 7 pm, there was a minor quarrel with his wife over the household expenses. He told that after the quarrel he went to sleep. Here the wife and daughters left the house. He looked for them after the family left and when she did not return, he came back home. In the morning he came to know about the incident.
