Assam cabinet approves simplification of flood damage assessment

Guwahati, Jun 8 (PTI) In a major administrative reform, the Assam Cabinet on Tuesday decided to approve simplification of flood damage assessment and infrastructure repairs.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, presiding over a cabinet meeting here, decided to authorize the Deputy Commissioners to take necessary action with regard to flood assessment and infrastructure repair within the time limit from April 1 to October 31.

Minister Pijush Hazarika told reporters after the meeting that the cabinet has also recommended to hold the first budget session of the current assembly from July 12.

The cabinet also decided to hand over 35 bighas of additional land to the Management Committee for smooth implementation of the Batdrav Than Cultural and Tourism Project at the birthplace of Vaishnava saint Shrimant Sankardev.

Hazarika said Cultural Affairs Minister Bimal Bora would visit the project site every month and review the status of the project.

A committee was formed under the chairmanship of MLA Padma Hazarika for the purpose of freeing 77,000 bighas of government land from encroachers at Gorukhuti in Sipajhar of Darang.

MP Dilip Saikia, MLA Mrinal Saikia and Parmanand Rajbanshi will be the other members of the committee, while Agriculture Department Secretary and Director Vinod Seshan will act as member secretary.

Hazarika said that this work will continue on a pilot basis till March 31 next year and the entire process will be monitored by the Chief Minister, Finance Minister and Transport Minister.

The Cabinet also decided to institute the Assam Ratna Award, which will be given annually to an individual who has made a significant contribution to the society, with a cash award of Rs.5 lakh.

The cabinet also decided that from this year literary pension would be provided in the name of eminent litterateur Homain Borgohain on his birthday on 7th December. Borgohain had recently passed away.

The Cabinet also decided that photographs of the President, Prime Minister and the first Chief Minister of Assam, Gopinath Bardoloi, would be installed in all government offices.
