The official said on Tuesday that the state government had ordered a survey to trace the orphans in the pandemic. The survey was conducted through ASHA workers, local governing bodies, health departments and other government agencies that had data on COVID-19 cases.
Harsha Deshmukh, Divisional Commissioner, Women and Child Development Department, said, “1504 children up to the age of 18 years have lost one or both of their parents in Marathwada till June 7. Of these, the mother of 181 children has died while the father of 1296 children has died.
He said that both the parents of at least 27 children died in the pandemic. He urged citizens to report such cases on the 1098 helpline number.
At least 339 children have lost one or both of their parents in Aurangabad district, the highest in the region, the official said.
“At least 1358 children will need care and protection in future. We will include these children in various government schemes. Some of them may have to be kept in centers and some families may get support to raise such children.”
