10 professional commando battalions to be raised in Assam: Sarma

Guwahati, Jun 9 (PTI) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday announced that 10 professional commando battalions will be raised in the state to strictly deal with new forms of crimes.

Addressing a day-long conference of Superintendents of Police at Kaziranga, the Chief Minister said that new types of crimes have been detected by the police, in view of which the methods of modernization of police force have been discussed.

He said, “For this, 10 professional commando battalions will be formed to deal strictly with these emerging crimes and 23,000 civil police personnel and 12,000 commando police personnel will be included in the system. “

Sarma said the recruitment rules for appointment to police forces would be modified to bring in more professionally qualified and skilled personnel in the system.

He said that keeping in view the welfare of the police personnel, police quarters would be constructed and two shift duty would be introduced in all the police stations to reduce the workload on the police personnel.

The Chief Minister said that it was a fruitful day of constructive discussions on how to make Assam the best state in terms of police and internal security.

The meeting was attended by the Director General of Police, all the Superintendents of Police and senior officers of the State Government.
